A five-axis machining center can dramatically reduce setups and improve part accuracy u2014 but only when it matches the parts you actually produce. Before committing to a purchase, work through these five questions with your supplier.
The Five Questions
- What is my dominant part geometry? Trunnion vs. swivel-head configurations suit different workpieces.
- Do I need simultaneous or positional five-axis? 3+2 positioning is cheaper and often sufficient for prismatic parts.
- What spindle speed and torque profile do my materials demand? Titanium and hardened steels need torque, not just high RPM.
- Is the control and CAM post-processor certified? A machine is only as good as its post.
- What after-sales support is guaranteed? Ask for response time, spare parts inventory, and training in writing.
